Announcement of the convening of a Williamstown Institute of Human Relations, to be held at Williams College, Williamstown, Mass., from August 24 to 30, was made yesterday by Dr. Everett R. Clinchy, director of the National Conference of Jews and Christians, under whose auspices the institute will be held.
The institute will be headed by Newton D. Baker, Prof. Carlton J. H. Hayes of Columbia University and Roger W. Straus, co-chairman of the National Conference. Several hundred lay and clerical leaders of the Protestant, Catholic and Jewish faiths from all parts of the country will attend.
The purpose of the institute, Dr. Clinchy announced, is to give an opportunity to leaders of the Protestant, Catholic and Jewish faiths, to consider thoroughly and systematically some of their common interests and concerns as citizens in American communities, and to consider the improvement of inter-group relationships in the United
The institute is planned, Dr. Clinchy said, as an occasion of study and exchange of experience and not for debate or for securing commitments to specific proposals or recommendations. The chief purpose, he said, is to arrive at a common understanding of the causes of difficulties in community relations.
The participants will be concerned with four specific questions:
(1) What are the lessons for the United States from inter-group conflicts in other nations?
(2) What are the important elements in the inter-group situation in American communities?
(3) What are the contributions of the social sciences to the improvement of inter-group relations?
(4) What are the practical methods of improving inter-group relations in American communities?
