Two leading members of the Hebrew University faculty in Jerusalem are coming to Columbia University here this summer to teach in a program of Hebrew and Jewish studies. The Israelis are Zvi Werblowsky of the department of religions and dean of Hebrew University’s humanities faculty, and Jacob Landau of the political science department. Joining them in the program will be Columbia faculty members Isaac Barzilay, professor of Hebrew language and literature, and Moshe Held, associate professor of Semitic languages and literature.
Thirty public school teachers from Junior and senior high schools will participate in the program–10 from New York state and 20 from other states, their visits made possible by grants from the Lucius N. Littnauer Foundation and the Foreign Areas Training Program of the New York State Board of Regents. A course in “Government and Politics in the State of Israel” will be required of all participants. Optional courses include Hebrew literature, Jewish history and Middle East politics.
