The exploits of Jewish partisans who, despite overwhelming odds, fought the Germans in Nazi-occupied Europe were described today at the European Conference of the World Jewish Congress by Jewish guerrillas from France, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Belgium and Greece.
Among the speakers was M. M. Meller, one of the delegates from Poland attending the conference, who holds the title of Here of the Soviet Union for his participation in partisan activities against the Germans.Meller received an ovation when he said that all Jews hoped for the establishment of a free Jewish life in Palestine. Anatole Wertheim, who represents the Association of Jewish Partisans in Poland, told the gathering that the Jews must not forget that the past six years were not only years of martyrdom, but an era of struggle for national freedom and social justice.
The conference heard a report last night by A. Leon Koubovitzky, general secretary of the Congress, on the organization’s activities since 1939. He warned that the “Jewish people must not again be found unprepared; existence of the Congress means that the Jewish people are prepared,” he added.
Arieh Tartakower, head of the rescue department of the organization, discussed relief and rehabilitation prospects for the Jews of Europe, pointing out that the chief tasks are to facilitate the emigration, especially to Palestine, of persons who wish to leave Europe, and to build a new life for those who remain.
