Increased government assistance for families of Jewish soldiers was demanded today at a plenum of the secretariat of the Histadruth, the Palestine Federation of labor. At the same time, the meeting expressed its thanks for the efforts by the Jewish Agency, Dr. Weizmann and Moshe Shertok to secure the establishment by Britain of a Jewish brigade group.
Sephardic Chief Rabbi Ben-Zion Usiel has refused to participate in the deliberations of the parties which boycotted the elections to the Assefath Hanivcharim, the Jewish National Assembly, although the Sephardic community was one of the major groups which refused to participate in the elections. Declining an invitation to attend a conference of the opposition elements, Rabbi Usiel said that he had devoted his life to Jewish unity and was pained to see dissension in the Yishuv.
