Walter Millis, formerly isolationist military expert and economist who has now come out for an American declaration of war against Germany, declared in an interview with the World-Telegram yesterday that the United States either had to fight Hitler or join him.
In the event the United States took the latter alternative, Millis said, “we would have to accept Hitler’s social controls. Freedom of press would be cut out immediately…We would have to accept some equivalent of the Gestapo, the secret police. Probably we would have to accept a powerful anti-Semitic movement and very likely there would be pogroms. There would be regimentation of our industry and reorganization of our economy.”
