Jews constitute less than ten per cent of the elements in the United States who are engaged in boycotting German goods in America, Samuel Untermyer, president of the Non – Sectarian Anti – Nazi League, declared here today at a mass meeting of the Los Angeles Americanization League in the Philharmonic Auditorium.
Mr. Untermyer took issue with the assertion made recently by Dr. Julius Lippert, the Nazi Commissar for Berlin, that the world-wide boycott of German goods is a “Jewish boycott.” Terming this assertion as “baseless mendacity,” Mr. Untermyer, in a comprehensive reply, pointed out that not less than 17,000,000 members of great labor organizations are actively engaged in the boycott and that the boycott movement is also being sponsored and supported by Catholics, Protestants, and especially by women throughout the world.
WILL BE INTENSIFIED
“A glance at the various elements that are engaged in the struggle to vindicate civilization by the boycott will show that the Jews are less than ten per cent in the great armies of the people who are boycotting Nazi goods,” Mr. Untermyer said.
“The boycott,” Mr. Untermyer continued, “is our only weapon. Effective as it has already proven, it has just begun to function. It will be intensified and strengthened throughout the world until it results in the collapse of the savage, medieval Nazi regime and the restoration in Germany of the racial, religious, and industrial freedom and democracy with which the people of that nation were blessed before this curse overtook them.”
REVIEWS PERSECUTION
Replying to the Nazi assertions from Berlin that “the Jews in Germany are not being persecuted,” Mr. Untermyer gave a bird’s eye review of what has happened to the Jews since Hitler came to power.
“The first act that visualized his accession,” Mr. Untermyer said, “was the indiscriminate slaughter of its innocent law-abiding minority of Jewish citizens of German birth and ancestry; the brutal beatings and imprisonment of thousands of others, driven by starvation and insanity to suicide; the boycotting and intimidation of the owners of Jewish shops and businesses; the destruction of their shops, and punishment of those who patronized them; the enforced discharge of Jewish employes, and their expulsion from the ranks of organized workers, and from the army and navy and from all posts in the Civil Government; the outlawing without exception of all of Germany’s great scientists, artists, authors, lawyers and physicians of Jewish blood or ancestry, or who were married to women with the ‘taint’ of Jewish blood, who had shed lustre upon their country and had been honored in foreign lands, and the destruction of their books including the dead with the living, all solely because of their ‘taint’ of Jewish blood; the confiscation of their property; the prohibition of all Jewish contact and the enactment, without rhyme, reason or excuse, of cruel medieval laws that are obviously confessedly intended to bring about the ultimate extermination of the Jewish population in Germany.
