Tribute to the memory of the late Joseph Vaszonyi, Hungarian Jewish statesman and former Minister in the Hungarian cabinet, was paid by the Hungarian parliament at its session on Monday.
Following the eulogy delivered by the vice-president of the Parliament, Sitvey, it was decided to “perpetuate the memory of the honest and brave political leader in the records of the parliament and to place a wreath on his grave.”
The widow of Vaszonyi received condolences sent on behalf of the government. The funeral is being arranged by the city.
Deputy Vaszonyi, who died on Saturday, succumbed to injuries inflicted upon him by members of the Awakening Magyars on Feb. 16. Vaszonyi was attacked on his way to Parliament when he was hit over the head and seriously injured. His assailants were arrested. They carried firearms and would have used them had they not been prevented from doing so by passersby who disarmed them. A stormy meeting took place in Parliament at that time, when an interpellation concerning the matter was introduced by the opposition. Count Bethlen, Foreign Minister, promised to take measures immediately to punish the assailants.
