Senator Burton K. Wheeler, isolationist leader and spokesman for the America First Committee, today declared his abhorrence of anti-Semitism but expressed his belief that Charles A. Lindbergh is not an anti-Semites, it was revealed by L. M. Birkhead, national director of Friends of Democracy, who asked the Senator if he shared “Lindbergh’s anti-Semitic views.”
In a telegram to Birkhead, Senator Wheeler said: “I abhor anti-Semitism. I do not believe Lindbergh is anti-Semitic. I think you and your group by charging him as being anti-Semitic are doing more to stir up anti-Semitism in this country than all of the anti-Semites in the country put together. You and some of the self-appointed leaders of the Jewish people are doing the Jewish race in this country a distinct disservice.”
