Ida Nudel, the “guardian angel” of the Soviet Jewry movement who was sentenced in June to five years internal exile, was severely beaten by fellow prisoners on her way to Tomsk, in Siberia, the site of her exile, it was reported today by the Student Struggle for Soviet Jewry and the Union of Councils for Soviet Jews. According to information they received, Nudel’s face was so badly swollen from the beating by women criminal prisoners that her eyes were closed up. Nudel was arrested June 2 and charged with “malicious hooliganism” for demonstrating against the arrest of Vladimir and Maryio Slepak on June 1.
