Excavations carried on at Beth Alpha, under the auspice of the Hebrew University, led tic the unearthing of an ancient synagogue during the second week of excavating

The southern part of a synagogue with rows of pillars the length of the hall with a central platform and broad suites, the width of the middle hall, leading to the Ark of the Holy Scrolls were uncovered. The decorations are particularly interesting, being the symbols of the twelve months of the year-the lamb, the ox the twins, the crab, the lion, the virgin, ect.-arranged with the symbols of the four seasons of the year, decorated with clusters of grapes birds and human figures. All pares of the structure are well preserved. The coloring and variety of the decorations are especially noteworthy.
