Thirty thousand Jewish families of the city, numbering about 100,000 people, received Passover relief from the Vienna Jewish community. Vienna Jewry has been almost completely impoverished by the World War, the continued economic crisis and the recent crushing of the Social Democratic party.
Many of the indigent Jews were given money grants to enable them to buy food for Passover. In addition Jewish kitchens were established in Vienna to provide Passover food for all eight days of the holiday.
The Jewish community also provided matzoth for prisons, hospitals and other communal institutions. Chalutzim, young pioneers on their way to Palestine, were given Passover food by the Jewish community.
