Jewish emigration through China has largely increased during the second half of 1929, according to a report which Hias has received from its Harbin Bureau. It was much larger than in the same period in 1928.
Some 994 Jews were aided by the Bureau to emigrate whereas in 1928 there were only 261. Of these 434 went to the United States and to the new immigration countries developed by Hias together with the Ica and the Emigdirect. The remaining 560 went to the interior of China and to other nearby countries. The migration into the interior of the country was practically in the nature of an evacuation due to the recent break in the Soviet-Chinese relationship.
Very few of those who went into the interior of China and nearby territories returned to Harbin having settled themselves permanently in the localities to which they went. Conditions among those who had remained behind were very deplorable and the Hias Bureau was instrumental in securing relief for them from relatives in the United States and elsewhere.
