International mediators urged Israel to ease its security clampdown in the West Bank and Gaza Strip ahead of Palestinian elections. “If people are going to campaign and move around to vote, some of the restrictions will have to be lifted, and we are hopeful that will be done,” U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan told reporters at a conference in Egypt on Tuesday. The call was endorsed by the United Nations’ partners in the diplomatic “Quartet” — the United States, European Union and Russia — that crafted the “road map” peace plan.
