Investigation of suspected fraudulent registrations or failure to register in the aliens registration which closed last December will probably not be under way on any major scale until next July, Justice Department officials disclosed today.
The Alien Registration Division is currently engaged in codifying and filling the 5,100,000 registrations received and these monumental records must be completed and checked with port of entry records and other sources of confirmation before the division can pick out cases where violations of the Aliens Registration Act, the immigrations laws, and other statutes are indicated.
Officials blamed the unexpectedly large registration total for the delay in getting the checking-up process under way, pointing out that preliminary plans had been based on an estimate of only 3,500,000 registrations. Some investigative work is being done and the WPA in New York City has established a project for the check on the port of entry records there, but it was admitted that the bulk of the problem will not be tackled until after the middle of the year.
