A recommendation that the U.N. Trusteeship Council return the resolution of the internationalization of Jerusalem to the U.N. General Assembly without acting on it, was made here this week-end at a meeting of the Council by Fadhil al Jamalil of Iraq.
The Iraqi delegate urged the Council to be realistic and recognize the opposition to the plan of the two powers which occupy Jerusalem. One has made the city its capital, he pointed out, while the other rejects every form of internationalization. This, he said, together with the fact that the Big Powers refuse to state their views with regard to the internationalization of Jerusalem, make it impossible to implement the Assembly’s resolution on Jerusalem.
Opposing the Iraq proposal, the representative of Belgium suggested that the Council proceed with a second reading of the text of the Jerusalem statute, in an effort to find a generally acceptable solution. The Belgian motion was supported by the U.S. delegate, whereupon the Council decided to start the second reading on Wednesday.
