The Israeli Cabinet met tonight in a special session to consider the text of the Security Council resolution on the Israeli-Syrian dispute which called on Israel to halt work on the Lake Huleh drainage project until an agreement could be reached through the chairman of the Mixed Armistice Commission. The text of the resolution was received here this morning from the Israel delegation to the United Nations.
An Israel Government spokesman, commenting today on the new Syrian complaint made to the Security Council yesterday that Israel had violated the Security Council’s instructions, said that the text had been received in Tel Aviv only this morning and was presently being examined by the competent Government authorities.
Syria itself, the spokesman charged, was flouting the Security Council resolution which enjoined both countries to resort to peaceful negotiations. He pointed out that the Syrian Premier had publicly declared that Syria would never institute peace negotiations with Israel.
United Nations Truce Chief Maj. Gen. William E. Riley arrived here late yesterday from Beirut for a conference with Acting Premier Moshe Sharett. The two men spent 45 minutes discussing the Israel-Syrian dispute. It was not disclosed whether the Truce Chief gave Mr. Sharett the U.N. Security Council’s instructions to halt operations in the Huleh region. Immediately after the conference, Gen. Riley returned to the Lebanese capital, where the U.N. truce set-up has an office.
