A 63-year-old Safad woman was feared to have drowned in the Jordan River today as a result of the torrential rainstorm that swept through Israel.
Mrs. Hannah Eisenberg, a member of the Soldiers Welfare Committee in Safad, was in a car with four other committee members taking gifts to soldiers on the Golan Heights, when the car stalled on a low bridge over the Jordan River, north of the Sea of Galilee. The driver. Yehuda Goren, chairman of the Safad committee and two women managed to reach high land.
But Mrs. Eisenberg and Mrs. Hannah Bram, were swept away by the currents. Mrs. Bram managed to cling to a rock until a helicopter rescued her, but Mrs. Eisenberg was not found despite a search by police, solders, kibbutz members and other volunteers.
Meanwhile in Tel Aviv the storm caused huge traffic jams in the middle of the city as the traffic lights were knocked out, Several roads were impassible because of the high water. Traffic was back to normal by, late afternoon. The only ones happy by the rain were farmers although citrus growers reported some damage because of high winds.
