Israeli Finance Minister Avraham Shochat authorized $70 million in Israeli government funding over five years for the Birthright Israel program. The project, sponsored by Jewish philanthropists, plans to eventually bring all Jews between the ages of 15 and 26 to Israel on free tours. Original plans for the $300 million initiative projected Israel’s share at $100 million, but a representative of Birthright Israel said Israel’s current pledge “fulfills Israel’s role as a full partner in the project.”
