A Syrian MIG 21 was downed this afternoon in an air battle between Israeli and Syrian planes over south Lebanon. An Israeli army spokesman said that Israeli planes were on a routine reconnaissance flight over south Lebanon when they encountered Syrian planes which tried to intercept the Israelis. All Israeli planes returned safely to their base, the spokesman said.
