“Peace and democracy are the twin foundations of Israel’s policy,” Avraham Harman, Israel Consul General in New York, told the closing session of the Hadassah convention last night, a few hours following his return from Israel, where he spent five weeks.
“It is inconceivable to the people of Israel that a country with this outlook should be expected to look on unconcerned, as neighboring countries, which reject peace and negate democracy, pursue their dangerous course of enmity and boycott, and still continue to enjoy the full assurance of economic and military aid from the free world,” Mr. Harman said.
“Israel is convinced that the peril of this situation will be understood, as it must be, if the interests of stability in the Middle East are to be well served,” he added. He reported that the people of Israel still regard “as their highest purpose” the need to provide homes and conditions for a decent life to “all those Jews in need of them.”
