Israel’s Labor Party edged ahead of the Likud in nationwide municipal elections, winning mayoral races in three of the five largest cities. Jerusalem incumbent Ehud Olmert of Likud was re-elected, as expected, for a second term. Religious parties won nearly half the seats in Jerusalem’s city council. Olmert, whose slate won only two of 31 seats, blamed the result on the low turnout of secular voters, which fell far below that of the city’s religious residents.
