Israel’s Supreme Court declared illegal a decades-old agreement under which fervently Orthodox yeshiva students are exempt from military service. The court ordered the Knesset to draft legislation regarding the deferments, which are currently given to tens of thousands of haredi students. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he would seek legislation that would “prevent a rift” between secular and Orthodox interests.
