A sixty-year old Jewish merchant and two other Jews were the first to be flogged publicly in Tripoli under a new order issued by the Italian governor there, according to information reaching here today.
In re-introducing public flogging for Jews charged with anti-State activities, the governor announced that those found guilty will not only be flogged but will also have their property confiscated and will be sent to jail. The 60-year old Jewish merchant received twenty-five strokes and was sentenced to three years imprisonment and 5,000 lire fine.
Information from Italy reaching here through neutral channels reveals that a special concentration camp for foreign-born Jewish women has been established “somewhere in Italy.” Of the 3,000 Jewish aliens who were residing in Rome, Milan and Turin, more than 1,000 have been interned in three camps, including the one for women, the report stated.
