The Jewish community in Libya, an Italian colony in Africa, will be given complete religious and cultural autonomy, according to a bill introduced into parliament by the government.
According to the provisions of the bill the Italian population in Libya is given constitutional guarantees that Jewish rights and customs are to be respected by the authorities. The rabbinical courts are granted power of decision in inheritance questions concerning Jewish families and all affairs pertaining to Jewish religious life.
The bill also gives Libyan-Italian citizenship to all Jewish residents of the colony. Jews will be given full Italian citizenship at the age of 21 if they serve in the army.
