Franz Ginsberg was elected a member of the Cape Senate. In succession to the late Senator Fuller.
Mr. Retief who nominated Mr. Ginsberg at a joint sitting of the Cape members of Parliament and the Cape Provincial Council, said that Mr. Ginsberg would be missed in the Chamber. He had been associated in public life with him for a long time, and found his a true South African a man sincerely attached to the land of his adoption, and very much interested in its advancement and welfare. He was a man of ripe experience. sound judgment and fully acquainted with all the requirements and needs of this country. Mr. Retief stated.
It is believed that this is the first occasion upon which a Jew has been elected a Senator, the previous Jewish Senators, the late Hon. Samael Marks and ex-Senator Charles P. Robinson being nominated to that body.
Franz Ginsberg was born in Germany in 1862. He is the owner of one of the largest match, candle and soap factories of South Africa, situated at King William’s Town, which he has hitherto represented in the Cape Provincial Council.
