Mayor Nathan Phillips was re-elected mayor of Toronto, Canada’s second largest city, for a second term. However, Aaron Horowitz, who served as mayor of the city of Cornwall for 18 years, was defeated by his Canadian-French opponent.
In Brantford, a thriving industrial city of 50,000 in Central Ontario, where there are only about 70 Jewish families, Max Sherman, a Jewish merchant, was elected mayor. He is the chairman of the local United Jewish Appeal and is the first Jewish citizen to hold the office of mayor.
In North York the largest and fastest-growing suburb in Metropolitan Toronto, 37 year old Vernon Singer was elected Reeve by a landslide victory of 24,000 votes to his opponent’s 5,000. Mr. Singer has been a Councillor in North York for the past three years and practices law in Toronto. He is vice-chairman of the North York Synagogue Council.
