A recommendation that a department of education be established and maintained by the Zionist Organization of America was made yesterday by Israel S. Chipkin, director of the Jewish Education Association, at the annual conference of the Zionist Commission on Education and Youth Organization, held at the Ninety-sec-ond Street Y.M.H.A. Chipkin presided over the meeting.
He also recommended that the Zionist Organization of America sponsor a more intense and vigorous movement for the learning of Hebrew by young Zionists in this country.
“The Hebraic movement in this country.” he stated, “can become one of the strongest cultural and sentimental instruments of the Zionist movement on this continent. Nothing identifies modern Palestine for the Zionists as much as the Hebrew language. Certainly the cultural value of Palestine can be more easily absorbed through the language.”
In the course of his address Chipkin reviewed the work of the commission during the past year.
Isaac Imber, secretary of the commission recommended the reorganization of the body and cutting down its membership to make it less unwieldy.
Morris Rothenberg, president of the Z.O.A., attended.
Committee reports were read by Dr. Alexander M. Dushkin, committee of youth education; Dr. Ben Edidin, sub-committee on youth organization; Dr. Leo Honor, committee on adult education; Dr. Jacob S. Golub, committee on schools; Louis Kraft, committee on communal institutions, and Menahen Ribelow, committee on Hebrew.
