Influential South American Jewish circles are today making efforts to obtain British consent to the landing at Trinidad of 86 Jewish refugees who are on their way back to Europe aboard the steamer Cabo De Hornos. Yesterday the Brazilian government refused the refugees transit visas which would have permitted them to reach Paraguay where they had been offered permanent residence.
Newspapers here quoted the captain of the ship, Jose Lanz Mayro, as saying that he was sure he would not reach Cadiz, the port to which his vessel is bound, with all of the refugees, “since the majority of them prefer suicide to the somber future awaiting them.”
