A total of about $1,000,000 has been raised for the United Jewish Appeal during the past month by Jewish benevolent and fraternal groups in New York, it was announced yesterday at a conference of 2,000 representatives of these groups held at the Hotel Sheraton Astor. The conference was addressed by Israel Ambassador Abba Eban; Oved Ben Ami, Mayor of Nathania, pioneer colony in Israel; and by Congressman Emanuel Celler.
Listing six “punishments” the United States Government has visited upon the people of Israel since November lst–including cessation of technical aid, loans and sales of foodstuffs and arms and a ban on passports for travel–Congressman Celler declared that in light of Israel’s offer to withdraw her troops from Gaza and the Gulf of Akaba area, “these proscriptions and sanctions must cease.”
