Scholarship funds for needy students at the Hebrew University, Jerusalem, were announced Tuesday at a meeting of representatives of Jewish fraternities, called by Harold Riegelman, former chairman of the Inter-Fraternity Conference. Scholarships amounting to $300, the amount necessary to cover a student’s minimum living expenses, will be awarded by Sigma Alpha Mu and Kappa Nu Fraternities. Mr. Riegelman, speaking on behalf of Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity, stated that at its convention in late December, Zeta Beta Tau would undoubtedly renew the scholarship awarded last year to a student at the Hebrew University.
Announcement was made at the meeting of a campaign by Young Judea of Canada, to complete the fund of $5,000 established as a permanent endowment for scholarships at the Hebrew University.
Mr. Riegelman also announced that the Hillel Foundation of the University of Illinois, in cooperation with Avukah and Junior Hadassah, would establish a scholarship this year amounting to at least $250. The Junior groups of Har Zion and Keneseth Israel of Philadelphia, Mt. Sinai Congregation of Sioux City, Iowa, and Beth El Zedek of Indianapolis, are also raising funds for a joint scholarship to be administered in their name, according to Mr. Riegelman.
Other fraternities participating in the joint effort on behalf of students at the University in Jerusalem include Alpha Mu Sigma. Alpha Epsilon Pi, Phi Epsilon Pi, Phi Sigma Delta and Tau Delta Phi, which will bring the question of establishing a scholarship before their annual conventions, to be held during the Christmas holidays.
