The Australian Jewish Land Settlement Trust which is engaged in an attempt to settle Jews on the land in Australia, has received a bequest of £600 from the executors of the estate of the late Arnold Witner. Endeavors are now being made to organize the movement throughout the Jewish community in New South Wales with the intention of then bringing in the other states to make the Australian Jewish Land Settlement Trust an All-Australian Jewish organization.
Twenty new arrivals who were in distressful circumstances have been placed in the Berwick Settlement of the Trust, where they will assist the settlers, who are at present in need of all the assistance they can obtain on their farms. It has also been decided to employ two expert instructors to visit the Berwick settlers weekly and place their services at their disposal.
The coordination of Jewish immigration activities in Australia, with the formation of local branches of the United Jewish Emigration Committee (Emigdirekt), which would communicate with the Hicem, has been decided on by a meeting of representatives of the various Jewish organizations of Sydney after listening to an address by S. Jacobi, the representative of the Emigdirekt.
Speaking of the conditions in Australia, Mr. Jacobi emphasized the importance of the Land Settlement Scheme. It was clear, he said, that the opportunities for small trading were not plentiful and a settler on the land could be considered well established.
