Steps needed to maintain the small Jewish community in Greece, now numbering only 5,000, were discussed here today at a conference of 40 delegates representing 16 Jewish groups throughout the country. The most important items on the agenda dealt with religious and cultural affairs, as the leaders of the community tried to plan the maintenance of Jewish religious life in Greece and ways to perpetuate Jewish tradition here.
Figures presented to the conference showed that 70, 000 Jews, of this country’s Jewish population totaling 90,000 before World War II, had been killed by the Nazis. Of those who survived, 15,000 emigrated to Israel. The remainder of 5,000 now live almost entirely either in Athens or in Salonika.
