Walter Rich, president of a local department store, today offered to advance to the city $260,000 to meet the salaries of the public school teachers. The acceptance of this offer by the city authorities means that 1,500 employes of the Atlanta school system will receive their December pay, which would otherwise have been delayed through lack of public funds.
In accepting the offer, Mayor Ragsdale said “never has there been a more generous attitude taken in Atlanta’s affairs. It means that Mr. Rich and his organization are intensely interested in the welfare of the teachers and other employes of the public school system who are giving their services for the education of Atlanta’s youth. I wish to commend this action in the highest possible terms. It is a gesture of loyalty unsurpassed in Atlanta.”
