Mr. Ismar David of Berlin has been awarded the first prize of £35, Mr. Z. Raban, of Jerusalem, the second prize of £25, and Mr. Gur Ariyeh of Jerusalem the third prize of £15, in accordance with the published conditions for the best design for the cover of Volume Five of the Golden Book of the Jewish National Fund. Thirty-one designs were submitted from several countries in addition to those from Palestine itself. The names of the artists remained unknown until after the awards were made.
The Judges, Mr. Herman Struck, Dr. Saul Tchernikovsky, and Mr. S. A. van Vriesland, found that Mr. David’s design was the most original and impressive. Mr. Raban’s design, they state, is a formal, well-proportioned conception, and Mr. Gur Ariyeh’s design, while much simpler than the first two, has a quiet distinction. The remaining designs were of varying merit, none, however, being of outstanding interest.
