A young Jewish navigator in the Royal Air Force, Warrant Officer Lewis Zalsberg, 23, was among those killed when the plane carrying the late Polish Premier, Gen. Wladyslaw Sikorski, crashed off Gibraltar last week, it is reported in the London Jewish Chronicle today.
Zalsberg, who was a resident of London, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal two years ago for gallantry in action during more than 100 operational flights over Germany, Italy and the Middle East. When Prime Minister Churchill visited the Middle Eastern theater, Zalsberg was his navigator on the trip from Caire to Tripoli according to the Chronicle.
The press also reports today that two Jewish officers attached to the South African forces, Col. Loswell Braun and Lieut.-Col. Harry Myers, have been elected to the Order of the British Empire for “gallant and distinguished services” in the Middle East.
