Jewish New Year Starts Tomorrow Evening; Services Arranged for Jewish Gi’s in Korea

The Jewish year of 5711 will be ushered in tomorrow night by Jews throughout the world with prayers for world peace, for Israel to surmount the difficulties it now faces, and for the enrichment of Jewish life in all parts of the globe.

In the Korean combat zone, Jewish servicemen will observe the holiday in make-shift facilities where three Jewish chaplains will conduct Rosh Heshanah services with religious supplies furnished by the National Jewish Welfare Board. Similar services for Jews in the American armed forces have been arranged by the J.W.B. at all bases in the Pacific, occupied Europe and in the United States.

In a Rosh Hashanah message to American Jewry, Benjamin G. Browdy, president of the Zionist Organization of America, declared that “American Zionists stand solidly behind the United Nations and our own government in their position against aggression in Korea and in the action to bring a halt to the march of the enemy which threatens to destroy our liberties.”

Pointing out that “Israel has demonstrated its loyalty to the Charter of the United Nations” and that “the Jewish state of Israel was among the first of the free and democratic nations of the world–in sharp contrast to the attitude of so-called neutrality and straddling by the Arab states–to voice its support of the efforts of the United Nations to restore peace and security in Koreas,” the Z.O.A. president called upon the American Government and people, “as the foremost champions of the cause of freedom of little nations, to continue to extend maximum economic and moral aid to the fledgling state of Israel.”

The message also pointed out that the American Jewish community–no matter what differences of opinion may exist on other issues–is united in its determination to aid in the economic and political security of the Jewish state. Moreover, it said, American public opinion as a whole has come to the realization that Israel constitutes a strategic bulwark of democracy in the Middle East.

J.D.C.’S “OPERATION MAGIC CARPET” ENDS DURING HOLIDAYS

Edward M.M. Warburg, chairman of the Joint Distribution Committee, reported in his Rosh Hashanah message that the High Holy Days would see the successful termination of the J.D.C.’s “Operation Magic Carpet” when the last of some 50,000 Yemenite Jews are flown out of Aden September 19. He extended “warmost thanks” to the American Jewish community for its aid to the J.D.C. programs but warned that 75,000 Jews in Europe and Moslem countries will be unable to go to Israel because the J.D.C. will have used up all of its emigration funds this month.

In Albany, Gov. Thomas E. Dewey issued a message to the Jews on the occasion of Rosh Hashanah expressing the hope that the new year would bring “peace and spiritual renewal to all mankind.” The Governor’s message spoke of the “firm and steady progress which the state of Israel has continued to make a free and steady progress which the state of Israel has continued to make a free and independent nation.” He added that “it is obvious, however, that such progress for Israel and other peoples can only be assured in a peaceful world.”
