Vilna, once famous as the “Jerusalem of Lithuania”, the seat of Jewish learning, now faces a severe crisis in the Jewish orthodox educational institutions, resulting from a lack of funds.
The crisis is felt especially in the school system maintained by the Mizrachi organization, a system which embraces elementary schools, high schools and a teachers’ seminary under the leadership of Rabbi Isaac Rubenstein, member of the Polish Senate and head of the Vaad Meyuchad. The seminary, which has many students who are preparing to become teachers in orthodox Jewish schools, is about to be closed. Senator Rubenstein, in a cable to the Central Relief Committee of New York, has appealed for immediate financial assistance.
