Trustworthy Prague sources reported today that a Nazi “cold” pogrom in Maerisch-Ostrau, Bruenn and other cities with large German population, has forced Jews to flee to predominantly Czech cities in the Bohemia-Moravia protectorate.
The same sources said that the “Spielberg” dungeon in Bruenn housed hundreds of Jewish prisoners who were subjected to blood-curdling brutalities. Fifty Jews were arrested in Bruenn after a brawl between a German officer and an “Aryan” Czech waiter in a cafe.
Dr. Nathan Bergl, a Jew who formerly housed the Austrian Social Democratic leader, Otto Bauer, and who was arrested immediately after the occupation, was released from custody a few days ago. Following his release, Dr. Bergl was asked by the Gestapo (German secret police) what he would say about the situation in the protectorate if he emigrated abroad. Dr. Bergl replied that he would speak the truth, whereupon he was immediately rearrested.
A special conference at Carlsbad, attended by representatives of farmers’ organizations, decided on “Aryanization” of agriculture in the Sudeten district. German farmers will be installed in all Jewish-owned farms.
