If the Jews were removed from Palestine, the cost of maintenance of the English position there would be just as great as it is at present and England would further be faced by a united body of Arab nationalities demanding self government.
This was the statement of Sir Martin Conway. M.P. for English universities in an address here on the impressions he gathered during his recent visit to Palestine.
“It would be distardly for England to break her word given in times of stress”, Sir Martin asserted speaking of the Balfour Declaration.
“The Jews have brought to Palestine law, order and machinery”, he declared, and whatever his politics every Jew is naturally an ally of England. “If England withdrew there would be terrible pogroms in Palestine, even if the Jews predominated, for Palestine is still but an island in the Arab sea.”
