Judiciary Committee Reported Agreed of Bill to Admit 200,000 Dp’s in Two Years

The House Judiciary Committee has tentatively greed on a bill to admit 200,000 DP’s to this country within two years which would ##mmit the quotas of the DP’s’ countries of origin in advance to the same numerical ##tent that the refugees are admitted as immigrants now, it was learned here today.

The Committee, which has been meeting in closed session to consider a bill introduced by Rep. Frank Fellows of Maine, has also decided on admitting the immigrants on the same nationality proportion that they exist among the total DP population. Priorities would be established for the DP immigrants on the basis of their occupational skills. The DP’s would be divided into three categories as follows:

Firstly, those qualified as farm laborers, physicians, dentists, medical nur##es, and household and clothing workers and persons possessing special educational, scientific or technological qualifications; secondly, blood relatives of American citizens or alien residents who entered the U.S. legally, to the third degree of ##nsanguinity; thirdly, all other eligible DP’s. Minor orphans would be admitted on a non-quota basis.Under the measure a DP would be defined as any person who on April 21, 1947, was and is now in Italy or in the United States, British or French occupation zones of Germany or Austria and who during World War II fought the Nazis and who is unable ##r unwilling to return to his native country for fear of persecution.
