Emulating the tactics of Loeb and Leopold, someone early today sent a ransom letter to the Jewish millionaire furniture man, Irvin Hartman of 5117 Ellis Avenue, demanding $100,000, otherwise his ten year old son, Irving would be kidnapped.
That the authors of this threatening letter are members of the Ku Klux Klan could be seen, when a few hours after the letter was received the Ku Klux fiery cross was set up in the air just two blocks from Mr. Hartman’s home.
The police believe the burning cross was a threat to Mr. Hartman, who informed the Polie Department about the letter. The Hartman home and family are now being guarded by police, and in the meantime search for the author of the letter and for the person who set up the cross is being conducted.
Mr. Hartman’s son was a schoolmate of the murdered Robert Franks, and lived in the same neighborhood.
