The name of Rabbi Joseph Frederick Stern, Minister Emeritus of the East London Synagogue, appeared in the list of honors issued by the King. He was made a Commander of the Civil Division of the Order of the British Empire (C. B. E.) in recognition of his social work in East London.
Rabbi Stern is popularly known as the “Jewish Bishop of Stepney.” He held office at the East London Synagogue for forty years, from 1887 to 1927. He was at one time chairman of the Mile End Board of Guardians, and he sat for a time also on the Stepney Borough Council. He was a founder of the Jewish Branch of the Children’s Country Holiday Fund.
