Latvian citizens, believing that “justice should be blind,” applauded the verdict of a higher court deposing and sentencing to six months imprisonment Justice of the Peace Duzman of Swinsk.
Duzman, through his application for many years of anti-Jewish prejudice while on the bench, achieved wide notoriety as an anti-Semite. He was in the babit of giving heavier sentences to Jews who appeared before him, unless he was bribed . Finally, the patience of the people of Dwinsk was exhausted and a popular petition was directed to the Ministry of Justice, which ordered an investigation. The investigation led to a trial and to the sentence.
