Leading German statesmen were present last night at a great mass-meeting of the German-Jewish Hilfsverein. Among those who attended were the president of the German Reichsbank, Luther; the Government Press Director, Zechlin; Police President Zorgiebel; Professor Albert Einstein; Eduard Bernstein; Bernard Kahn; many diplomats, ministers, Reichstag members and leading representatives of German commerce, finance and industry.
The speakers were: Consul General Landau, Katharina Kardorff Oheimb, Dr. Rudolf Breitscheid, leader of the Socialist faction in parliament; Minister of State Reinhold, State Secretary Schaeffer, and Willy Dreyfus. All the speakers praised the Hilfsverein for its manifold activities. It was shown that during the last few years the Hilfsverein spent fifty million marks for cultural purpose, won equal rights for East European Jews and saved large portions of East European Jewry from destruction.
The non-Jewish speakers stressed the fact that the Hilfsverein can be regarded as an example of cultural work which binds the nations, and brings praise to the Jewish and German names. Paul Nathan, James Simon and Max Warburg, leaders of the Hilfsverein, were particularly lauded for their work.
