Organizations of German World War veterans, sympathetic with Hitlerism, are growing rapidly in Milwaukee.
A Stahlhelm (Steel Helmets) chapter has just been organized, made up of men who fought not only on the German front lines, but who batted the Spartacists in the 1919 revolution, the Rhineland separatists and the communists, during the period preceding Hitler’s capture of power. This group is working closely with the Deutsche Ehren Legion (German Legion of Honor), a kind of a catch-all group taking in any ex-German soldier with Fascist leanings and any American, too, who may in some way have befriended Germany. Heinz Von Nobel of Milwaukee, described as a German officer during the War, heads both organizations. The two groups are to hold a joint “kamradschaft” (social) evening on March 10 in the Cafe Chanticleer. Thus far all their affairs marked by display of Nazi flags and singing of Nazi songs, have been held in secret.
Milwaukee is now also the home of a Verein Der Deutschen Weltkriegs Veteranen (Order of German World War Veterans), which claims to be neutral on the question of Fascism and to have members of all shades of opinion.
