London Jews Raise $60,550 for Jewish Education

Winston Churchill, former British Colonial Secretary and author of the White Paper on Palestine, and Sir Eustace Percy were the guests of honor last night at the Jewish triennial dinner for the purpose of raising £15,000 for Jewish religious education in England. Sir Robert Waley-Cahen was Chairman at the dinner.

Winston Churchill. in his address. declared that the Jews in England are happier than anywhere else. He invoked the Jewish community to aid in the reconstruction of the country after the war. He referred to Palestine, declaring that Zionists have done marvelous work Rishon L’Zion, for instance, he declared. is a magnificent grove, where before was only barren land.

Dr. Joseph H. Hertz Chief Rabbi of the British Empire. and Rabbi Joel Blan, former American Rabbi who now occupies the pulpir of the Berkley Street Synagogue. were the other speakers.

The Chief Rabbi criticized the Soviet Government for its outlawing of Jewish religion and Jewish education.

Rabbi Blan scared that the Jews were “children of the East and narshings of the West.” The task before as is to ha### the two through education.

The amount of £13,811 was raised at the dinner.
