A fascist organization calling itself the “National Guard,” last night set fire to a synagogue in the East End after burning one of the Holy Scrolls. The synagogue is in a section of the city which was the scene of clashes between Jews and fascists before the war.
An anonymous caller phoned a newspaper office this morning, describing himself as a representative of the National Guard, and said that the desecration of the synagogue was a “warning to terrorists in Palestine that unless their policy against British troops ceases, the National Guard will meet terror with terror.”
A spokesman for the synagogue expressed great concern at the resumption of anti-Semitic activity, while a spokesman for the Jewish Agency said: “We have never heard of the National Guard. There are a lot of Fascist organizations about these days, operating under all sorts of names.”
