Addressing a dinner given here in his honor by the American ORT Federation, Lord Marley criticized British policy in Palestine and appealed for American cooperation in strengthening support of the Jewish minority throughout the world.
Lord Marley pleaded for maintenance of the Balfour Declaration’s integrity, adding the “safety valve of immigration to Palestine is no longer available.”
Referring to the origin of the ORT in Czarist Russia, Lord Marley stated there was “no Jewish problem in the Soviet” and declared the ORT was to a great extent responsible for the cooperative spirit displayed there.
Lord Marley, describing the poverty of Eastern Europe’s Jews as a result of the world upheaval in the wake of the last war, stressed the necessity of finding a haven for the Jews. He pointed to Ecuador as a favorable place.
Other speakers included Senator Robert Wagner, who described the Jews as the “favored recipients of the evil results of war,” and Dr. David Lvovitch, vice-president of the World ORT Federation, who asked the support of these in high positions in this country and praised the aid given the organization by the Joint Distribution Committee.
The dinner was attended by a number of Congressmen and Senators.
