The will of the late Lord Melchett, industrialist, statesman and Zionist, who was reputed to be one of the richest men in England, was made public today and showed that he had left but $5,000,000. This sum does not include his land holdings in Palestine nor his famous art collection, which together are believed to be valued at more than $1,000,000. He controlled companies with a combined capital of $600,000,000 at the time of his death on December 27, 1930.
One-fifth of his estate, or one million dollars will go to the government in duties. The will provides that $250,000 be given to his widow, and $500,000 to his son Henry, who succeeds to Lord Melchett’s title. The Palestine properties are left to Lady Erleigh, the wife of Viscount Erleigh, who is the son of Lord Reading, former Viceroy of India. The balance of the estate is divided between his other two daughters.
