Louis Lipsky, dean of the American Zionist movement, will be honored tomorrow at a luncheon arranged by Dr. Nahum Goldmann, president of the World Zionist Organization, marking the 85th birthday of Mr. Lipsky. Top leaders of all major Jewish organizations will pay tribute to the veteran Zionist leader.
For more than 50 years identified with democratic movements in the United States, Mr. Lipsky has been a leader of the Zionist Organization of America and of the American Jewish Congress for many years. He was also one of the founders of the World Jewish Congress. He was also a member of the World Zionist Executive and of the Jewish Agency executive. Together with the late Henry Monsky he organized in 1944 the American Jewish Conference as central representative body of American Jewry, and was the first and only chairman of the executive committee of the Conference. He was also chairman of the American Zionist Emergency Council which later became the American Zionist Council, central body of the American Zionist movement.
Mr. Lipsky was born in Rochester, N.Y., on November 30, 1876. He studied at Columbia University and worked as drama critic for the Morning Telegraph in New York. He is the author of several books and plays. He became interested in the idea of rebuilding Palestine as the Jewish National Home early in his life and was instrumental in the formation of the Zionist Organization of America of which he was first secretary and later the president.
